About the course

In the artistic tradition of learning from the experts who came before, this course studies notable works of interactive fiction to understand how they succeed. It is designed for self-study through play, note-taking, and creative exercises.

We take a broad view of interactive fiction, including parser games, choice-based works, and quality-based narrative systems. As a working standard, we focus on games that performed well in IF Comp or other competitions, or that have proven notable over time. Commercial considerations are not a focus.

This course is intended to evolve: to be refined, expanded, and rewritten as needed.

Contributions

If you’re working through the course, I’d be glad to hear from you. I’m especially interested in linking to worked exercises or discussions to help share knowledge within the community.

If you are an author of any of the featured works, feel free to lend me a better perspective.

Suggestions for works to study or exercises to include are also very welcome.

Who wrote this?

I’m Brett Witty. I’ve entered IF Comp a few times (2005, 2023, and twice in 2025), though I’ve yet to crack the top ten. This course is for my own creative development, but I hope others find it useful as well.
